Good news! North Carolina and the Interstate Counseling Compact

The LPCANC Board of Directors unanimously voted to support proposed North Carolina legislation to enter the Interstate Counseling Compact.

The Counseling Compact is an interstate compact, or a contract among states, allowing professional counselors licensed and residing in a compact member state to practice in other compact member states without need for multiple licenses.

What other professions have an interstate compact? Licensure compacts exists for physicians, physical nurse, physical therapists, psychologists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists. More compacts are being developed for other similar professions.

What is the compact's status in North Carolina?

In our NC Legislature, bills must first be introduced in committee, reviewed and passed to move over to the other chamber. The "Cross-Over" deadline is important. If a bill does not meet the crossover deadline, it has no future to become legislation in that session.

The House-Senate Crossover Deadline is May 13, 2021. In the event this proposed compact legislation does not make progress this year, LPCANC will continue the work and prepare for the 2022 NC Legislative Session.

Our LPCANC Lobbyist will actively monitor the legislation and its' progress and we will keep you informed. At the current time, this proposed interstate compact is still only in draft stage and has not yet been introduced to committee.

We will post updates via email and the LPCANC website. Your fellow members are working hard as Advocacy and Communications Committee volunteers and will upload important updates and information.
